“With .frl, we reflect our Frisian identity.”

At De Fryske, they like to get down to business. They are doers, not just talkers. And it shows. De Fryske’s cheeses have caught the eye of juries all over the world and have won numerous awards. The name of the cheese brand proudly bears the Frisian identity. And the cheese varieties were also given Frisian names. Jong Belegere Fryske, Belegere Fryske, Âlde Fryske and Stokâlde Fryske flaunt the sustainable cheeses. Why did they also choose to use a Frisian domain? We are just as curious!

“We chose .frl to indicate our strong Frisian identity. Not to make our cheese regional, but to emphasise the origin,” says Catharinus Wierda, founder of De Fryske. “That Frisian identity underlines authenticity. Sometimes people think our cheese is only available regionally. And we certainly are, but the rest of the Netherlands knows how to find us, too. Through our web shop, but also in the supermarket. In that sense, we are no different from Gulpener beer or Beemster cheese. In our brand image, we choose to be less ‘Frisian’ and instead focus on the sustainable character of our cheese. So even though our Frisian profiling sometimes requires some explanation, it reflects our identity. That is important for the story we have to tell.”
